Our History
Our history is one of growth while serving the Appomattox community
1899. Memorial Methodist Church had its beginnings with a small group of Methodists and Presbyterians gathering for Sunday School. The first church building located on Church Street was dedicated on the fourth Sunday in September 1899. The cost of the Methodist Episcopal Church building was $1,800.
1937. October 1937, work began on remodeling the one room church and the addition of a church school annex. The new building was consecrated April 10, 1938 and dedicated July 16, 1944.
1958. On September 7, 1958, a lot on Court Street was purchased as a site for a more adequate building and parking space. The cost of the lot was $16,000. The Church Street building was sold to the Pentecostal Holiness Conference for $25,000.
1972. The Memorial Methodist Church building was consecrated April 15, 1962 and March 28, 1972 it was dedicated. The cost of construction was $156,429.
1989. In answer to a community need, we opened Methodist Day Care in 1989. We serve 100 children with 2 dozen staff members 5 days a week, 12 hours each day.
1999. We started our building plan calling it “Reaching Up, Reaching Out,” reaching UP to God, and reaching OUT to our world.
2012. On August 26, 2012, we held the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Legacy Hall, a 1.7 million dollar multi-purpose facility, completing Phase 1 of a 3-phase 3 million dollar project.
2015. Phase II of our building project, dubbed "The Connector" was completed. It literally connects our old building to the new building. Providing additional classrooms and office space as well as an elevator - all of which helps us connect better with our church family and community.
